  1. My partner and I (can't remember her name, sorry!) came up with the idea that in a political sense, the darkness could be people from an outside land, coming to conquer this small town. In some places, the Church made the rules and was the government. The Church might be what ruled that town, and the outsiders would have to stand up against the Church.

  2. Our group (Shamalee, Naibori and myself) determined that the image was symbolic and spiritual. The dark tree represents the dark forces of nature. Also the proportion of the image that is dedicated to humans, as compared to the part dedicated to nature, is small. It shows that nature has more power and influence than people. The height of the church is significant, it is the closest human creation to the heavens. It is the connection of humans to higher beings.

  3. Our group (Ankita, Ms.Rodriguez, and myself) agreed that the image was essentially symbolic to many different things and can be viewed the best through a spiritual perspective. A detail in the image that captured most of our attention was the church which was painted to have the highest roof emphasizes its significance in comparison to the other small houses. We also related our own cultural views and agreed that in small villages like the one shown on the image most of the time the townspeople are very unified and religious therefore the church can represent their sanctuary.

  4. Anyi, Yordania, and myself came up with the idea that Van Gogh's "Starry Night" portrayed a significant contrast that can symbolize the view on good verses evil, an ongoing spiritual battle. As we observed the background of the image, we noticed that the bright colors and light and stars of the sky are spread throughout the top half of the image, however, in the front almost center of the image, there is a black looking tree or hill that is blocking and nearly taking over the image. This black section is spaced out from top to bottom and is contrast to the starry sky, which can mean wherever there is good, there is also evil and these two will always be in constant battle trying to run the other in this world. The black tree or hill gives off a feeling of darkness and confusion, but the starry night gives promise and makes you look at the "bright side" of the picture.

Van Gogh's The Starry night is a very symbolic painting. A big portion of the painting is the sky, making the town look very minuscule, it is silenced in a sense. The starry night and the bright moon brings about reminiscent feelings. But, taking up a rather big portion on the left side of the painting is a cypress tree sprawling towards the sky. The cypress tree can be interpreted as a dark spirit and the swirls in the sky are spirits from the tree coming over the town. The horizon line serves as a barrier protecting the town. Also the tallest building and in the center of the painting is the church. It symbolizes how it has the most power, thus making this a political piece of work also.
