2/9 The African Migrants

I was mistaken when I said this was a photo of Somalians. These are North Africans, specifically from Tunisia and Libya, who are escaping from their countries. The orange boat is Italian, not Spanish. For the purpose of the exercise, however, it does not make a difference. The theme still is migration, with the migrants escapees from a place of turmoil.

Please post your reaction, interpretation, and evaluation of this image here.

  1. This image doesn't really get a reaction from me. When i see it, i just think of a group of people migrating from their native land in order to get a better life. They seem to be all men and they are being helped by the guys on the orange boat. Like someone in class mentioned, the orange boat is named "salvamento" which means to save, and that is just what they are doing.

  2. When I first saw this picture I thought it was very straightforward to me. I thought that the group of people in the picture was from the same ethnicity and that they were from Africa. As many immigrants the reason is to have a better life and to work hard. However, this picture gives the audience an idea where the Africans are immigrating. It just came to my mind that it could be the united stated. Since many people from different countries come to work hard and help their family that are still in their native countries. One thing that attracts my attention was the fact in the boat was only surrounded by male.I was not able to see a female and I look very closely to the picture. One reason could be that the women stayed with their families until their men are looking for the wealth of their families.

  3. This picture shows a group of men migrating from their country. The look Africans and they are being help by an orange boat. Eventhough they are being save by the orange boat, they look sad which can mean that they have been through hard times. The boat is small and it contain so many people onboard. It looks like an act of desperation, escaping from their country without thinking about safety.

  4. What everyone sees is a group of young black males in a boat. The boat is crowded and the temperature looks warm. It must be a tropical hot place. They are most likely refugees migrating because it doesnt seem like they just need a vacation. They might've been in some kind of disaster to all cram inside one small boat. The men dont look happy, almost worried. It looks like they need help. On the orange boat, it looks like the hispanic man is rescuing them one by one. The other boat is bigger and looks cleaner too, while the crowded boat is small and dirty. I agree with what Anyi is saying. The reason all of them are male is probably because the women are staying home with the kids and shouldnt be brought into a crowded little boat. It loos like they are going through extremely hard times.

  5. When i look at this picture i think of slavery. I think of people migrating to freedom and running away from the hate. I feel that all these men are trying to find life and live for their families. I feel that they want to migrate to find opportunites to get money and be stable. The one thing i think that there is only a vast population of male on this boat is because back then men were strong and were allowed to get jobs. There isnt a sight of females on this boat for its own reasons, maybe because the men wanted them to stay in hiding to be safe until they got a job. The other boat looks like its a savior boat to save these people. It shows that theyre going to be in a better place since they are going through rough times.

  6. I didn't have prior knowledge on the occasion of this picture but since the people on the boat is so packed, I assumed there was an immediate need for them to migrate. They also don't look wealthy and they all seem to be sitting there, waiting to transfer over to the bigger boat. There is great contrast seen between the small boat and the big boat. The difference in wealth and technology advancement. The small boat is run down, dirty, and has an eagle in the front, that is a symbol of culture. The other boat is new, bright orange, and massive. There is no individualism seen since it is not identifiable who is doing what.
